No es cosa fácil esclarecer el origen del tronco de este linaje, porque en torno de ellos hay no pocas fábulas e invenciones mezcladas con noticias de algún valor histórico. Se opone también a ese esclarecido la mucha antigüedad del apellido, no faltando quien opine caprichosamente que viene de los B. romanos, por haberse hallado en España monedas antiquísimas con el nombre de Cayo B.; o quien afirme, como el cardenal de Burgos (citado por Antonio B., arcipreste de la iglesia de Cuenca), que en los archivos de Bermeo, Oña, Santo Domingo de Silos y Simancas, halló diferentes privilegios del tiempo de los godos, en los que confirman caballeros con el apellido B., sin repara r que la formación de los apellidos y la transmisión de éstos de padres a hijos, son varios siglos posteriores a tan remotos tiempos.
