Di origine Novarese, e discendente dai Conti di Castello. Carlo Magno investì Ottone Barbavara nell'811 della signoria di Pallanza e di altri paesi sul lago Maggiore creandolo Conte del S.R.I.* I fratelli Giuseppe e Marco, feudatori di Gravellona, furono ascritti alla nobiltà milanese nel 1677. Da Galeazzo Visconti ebbero privilegi e potenza. Un Francesco fu costituito Vice Duca delo Stato. Furono vescovi un Michele di Tortona nel 1444; un Amedeo di Mondovì nel 1497 e un Giovanni di Como. *Sacro Romano Impero, nome ufficialmente assunto dal ricostituito Impero Romano d'Occidente dopo la solenne incoronazione di Carlo Magno in Roma (800). Lo stemma della famiglia Barbavara è : D'azzurro, alla torre d'argento fondata sulla pianura erbosa al naturale; col capo d'oro, all'aquila di nero coronata dello stesso. Alias.
