Ursprünglich aus Chieti stammende Familie mit alter und edler Tradition, die sich im Laufe der Jahrhunderte in Kampanien und anschließend in verschiedenen Regionen Italiens ausbreitete. Der Familienname stammt aus der Zeit vor dem 16. Jahrhundert und sollte von einem Spitznamen des Vorfahren stammen, der mit seinem Bart zusammenhängt. Die Namen der Barbellas werden hauptsächlich in Texten, notariellen Urkunden und Verträgen für den Verkauf von Grundstücken und Häusern seit sehr alten Zeiten erwähnt, aus denen hervorgeht, dass sie wohlhabende und adelige Verhältnisse hatten. Im 17. Jahrhundert war ein Antonio da Lanciano Feldmeister in Reggio, die Position war käuflich, d.h. frei empfangbar und übertragbar, folglich konnten die Nachkommen der Hocharistokratie sehr früh in den Rang einsteigen und sich daher in einer guten Position befinden, um ihn anzustreben für das Dienstalter bis zu höheren Besoldungsgruppen.
