Famille originaire de Chieti, de tradition ancienne et noble, qui s'est propagée au cours des siècles en Campanie puis dans diverses régions d'Italie. Le nom de famille est antérieur au XVIe siècle et devrait dériver d'un surnom de l'ancêtre lié à sa barbe. Les noms des Barbella sont principalement mentionnés dans les textes, actes notariés et contrats de vente de terres et de maisons depuis des temps très anciens, d'où il ressort qu'ils étaient de conditions riches et nobles. Au XVIIe siècle un Antonio da Lanciano était maître de terrain à Reggio, la charge était vénale, c'est-à-dire librement recevable et transférable, par conséquent les rejetons de la haute aristocratie pouvaient accéder très tôt au grade et donc se trouver en bonne position pour aspirer pour l'ancienneté aux grades supérieurs.
