One of the oldest and most notable families of Castelvetro, a municipality in the Modena hills. On 8 June 1700, the Conservators of the Community of Modena created the Most Excellent sig. Dr. Carlo, of the late Giovanni Antonio Barberi of Castelvetro, and his children and descendants of both sexes in perpetuity, honorary citizens of Modena. Carlo (dec. 1714), held the podesta office of Modena from 1697 to 1709 and was then appointed Councilor of Justice by the Duke of Este. Previously he had held the podesties of Trasilico in Garfagnana (1680), of Castelnovo Monti in Reggiano (1682), of Sassuolo (1685-88), and had been Governor of Finale (1688) and in Frignano (1694). An uncle of his Bartolomeo, di Lorenzo, Capuchin (1615-1697), Father Definitor of the Capuchins for the province of Lombardy, was a distinguished Theologian and left several philosophical and theological works in print.
