Antigua y muy noble familia piamontesa, con residencia principal en Castellamonte, de clara y ancestral virtud, que se ha extendido a lo largo de los siglos en varias regiones de Italia. Según genealogistas autorizados, el origen de esta cognominación debe buscarse en un apodo basado en la profesión del barbero, una vez una especie de médico, aunque en menor escala. La clara nobleza de la familia se ve confirmada por la presencia de su blasón, en el valioso trabajo "El diccionario histórico-blasón de familias italianas nobles y notables que están extintas y florecientes", por el genealogista Giovan Battista di Crollalanza, publicado en Pisa en 1886 en tres volúmenes, de más de 1400 páginas.
