I più antichi documenti che ci danno notizia della famiglia sono un placito tenuto nel 1059 nella Pieve di S. Stefano sulla Chiassa dal marchese Gottifredo assistito, fra gli altri, dai conti Ranieri e Bernardo, figli del conte Ardingo, e una sentenza in favore della Badia Berardenga pronunziata dalla marchesa Beatrice il 25 maggio 1070 in Firenze, nel quale, fra i baroni presenti, vien citato Ranieri di Ardingo, signore di Galbino. Niente tuttavia di sicuro sappiamo intorno alla vita e all'origine del conte Ardingo, essendo su ciò completamente discordi i pareri degli storici: che nella seconda metà del sec. XI la famiglia era già ricca e potente, e che doveva essere di origine franca vedendosi i discendenti di Bernardo di Ardingo professare la legge salica. Il conte Ranieri ebbe 6 figli. Uno di questi, Alberico, signore di Galbino e Montedoglio, vendè con atto 13 novembre 1083 al fratello Bernardino Sidonia
