Apellido de origen portugués. Procede de Don Sancho Núñez de B., señor de la Quinta de B., solar de la familia, situada en las tierras de B., de donde tomara su apellido. Se encuentra a pocos kilómetros de la ciudad de Porto, junto al Pazo de Sousa y el río Duero. Don Sancho Núñez, era hijo del Conde Don Nuño de Celanova y nieto paterno del Conde Don Teobaldo Núñez, uno de los más ilustres varones del tiempo de Don Bermudo II de León. Doña Lucrecia B. de Caldas, hermana del Licenciado Gaspar Agustín B. de Caldas, Síndico Personero General de Tenerife en 1612 y su Regidor Perpetuo en 1615, era hija de Juan Agustín B. de Caldas, de la villa de Cobra, Concejo de Paredes entre Duero y Miño en Portugal y de su esposa Doña María Sánchez de Encinoso. Contrajo matrimonio en la Parroquia de los Remedios de La Laguna, (Tenerife), el 25 de abril de 1615, con Don Juan de Meza Luzardo y Porras, Capitán de Infantería española, Regidor Perpetuo, decano de Tenerife y Alcaide del castillo principal de Santa Cruz. Fueron sus hijas: Doña María, Doña Ana de Santa Lucía, Doña Juana de la Pasión y Doña Francisca de la Trinidad de Mesa B. deCaldas y Porras, nacidas todas en san Cristóbal de la Laguna; las tres últimas profesaron como religiosas en Santa Clara de dicha Ciudad. Doña María, jefe, cabeza y pariente mayor de la Casa de Mesa, casó con su tío, primo segundo de su padre, el Sargento Mayor Don Alvaro de Mesa y Azoca.
