Antica famiglia piemontese, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Al dir di alcuni genealogisti, tal casato discenderebbe dalla nobile famiglia valdostana de Bard, oriunda dall'omonimo comune, la quale era fregiata dei titoli di signori di Bard, Donnas, Pont Saint Martin e Vert. Stando ad altre ricostruzioni storiche, invece, tal casato nulla avrebbe a che fare con i detto de Bard, dal momento che, verosimilmente, sarebbe stato fregiato del cavalierato in seguito alla virtuosa e coraggiosa partecipazione di un Saverio Bardo, sotto i vessilli del "Conte Rosso", ovvero Amedeo VII, alla conquista, nel 1388, di uno sbocco al mare con Nizza, uno dei capisaldi del potere della Casa Savoia in Piemonte. In ogni modo, tal casato, in ogni epoca, sempre riuscì a distinguersi, grazie agli elevati personaggi, a cui diede i natali. Tra questi, senza nulla levar al valore degli omessi, ricordiamo:
