Famiglia sassarese le cui noitizie risalgono al secolo XIV. Nel 1430 un Nicolò ottenne il cavalierato ereditario, nel 1442 suo figlio Pietro ebbe il riconoscimento della nobiltà generosa per i suoi meriti militari. L'importanza della famiglia crebbe con suo nipote, un altro Pietro, che nel 1527 difese Osilo dai Doria; egli era procuratore del conte di Oliva e sposò Erilla Manca di Thiesi. I suoi figli diedero vita a due rami diversi della famiglia: Gaspare ereditò dalla madre la signoria di Thiesi e fu rettore della Romangia. Nel 1554 suo figlio, un altro Pietro ottenne un ulteriore riconoscimento della nobiltà. Questo ramo si estinse agli inizi del secolo XVII con la morte di Antonio ed il feudo passò ai Ravaneda per matrimonio. Da Giovanni, governatore di Sassari, l'altro dei figil del primo Pietro, discese il ramo dei cavalieri Cariga, i cui membri, nel secolo XVII, ricoprirono ripetutamente l'ufficio di maestro
