Famiglia che si vuole originaria di Napoli, dove possedette il ducato di Caivano e la baronia di S. Arcangelo. Un Giovanni fiorì qual maestro razionale della Corte Reginale il 1347. Il primo a recarsi in Sicilia sembra essere stato un Giovan Luca sotto re Martino, dal quale per i suoi segnalati servigi ottenne rimunerazioni ed onori; e fu segretario della regina Bianca. Un ramo di questa famiglia fermò sua stanza in Messina, ed un Giuseppe Barile, al dir del Villabianca, comprò dalla R. Corte la terra baronale di Mongiuffi unitamente ai casali di Melia e Kaggi nel 1639; indi nel 1643 l'eresse in marchesato. Di tal famiglia molto discorre il p. Ansalone nell'ultima digressione. Il detto marchese Giuseppe, come riferisce il Mollica, lasciò un grosso volume di pregevoli memorie della città di Messina. Il figlio Giovanni fu giudice della R. G. Corte ossia Tribunale Supremo del regno nel 1652. Morì
