Famiglia proveniente a Lucca da Averaria (Bergamo) nel sec. XV con Jacopo di Bariona dei Guarinoni, il quale ottenne la cittadinanza il 27 ottobre 1495. Bartolomeo, di Bernardino, fu dichiarato nobile personale nel 1720, come il figlio suo Bernardino nel 1734, e con decreto dell'8 aprile 1768 tale nobiltà fu estesa ai figli maschi e femmine dello stesso Bernardino. Nel 1773 la famiglia fu riconosciuta nobile originaria. I membri della famiglia coprirono cariche onorifiche negli uffici della Repubblica e nel sec. XVIII si distinsero fra gli eruditi cittadini con Bernardino (1694-1781) e i suoi figli Giuseppe Vincenzo, Bartolomeo e Luigi, tutti infaticabili ricercatori di archivi. Bernardino (1829-1901) fu ingegnere, agronomo, segretario per le scienze della R. Accademia Lucchese e scrittore di materia ferroviaria. Ebbero il loro palazzo in piazza San Pietro Somaldi e i sepolcri in S. Romano e in S. Pietro maggiore. Sono riconosciuti nobili di Lucca (m.f.) i
