La famiglia trae origine dalle Romagne e dall'Appennino Parmense. Un ramo si trasferì in Sicilia, al seguito dell'imperatore Federico II. Nel 1222 si ha un Gesualdo, crociato in Terra Santa. Nel Trapanese tale famiglia ottenne privilegi e potenti feudi, come la baronia nelle isole di Favignana, Levanzo e Maretino con le tonnare di San Nicolò e S. Leonardo. Tali concessioni furono nel 1445 confermate a Melchiorre, dal re Alfonso d'Aragona. Un ramo si trasferì nel Beneventano dove nel 1606 si trova in possesso di vasti feudi, quali Cirritello, Lucita, S. Marco, Cocuozzolo, Gambarotta, Staffili. Nel 1619, il 15 febbraio otteneva l'ascrizione al patriziato beneventano. E' iscritta, infatti, nel Libro d'Oro col titolo di patrizio beneventano in persona di Maria Isabella in Grassi, Elena in Pasanisi, Giuseppe Martini, nonchè del loro zio Alessio. I cognomi così antichi rendono decoro non solo alle famiglie ma anche alle città che li hanno accolti;
