Antichissima famiglia friulana, alla quale vecchie genealogie attribuiscono a capostipite un Federico di Baden (Miles), che nel 1073 sarebbe stato investito da un duca di Carintia di casa e terre in Buja. Dai documenti appare che, fino dal 1194, abitava in quel castello un Johannes de Buja, progenitore probabilmente della nobile famiglia di Buja, che ivi ebbe nel periodo patriarcale feudo di abitanza e ministeriale e che posteriormente si divise nelle nobili famiglie Barnaba, Rizzardi e Rodolfi di Cordovado. Nel 1250 un Guecello di Buja interveniva quale notaio in una importante convenzione fra Volrico duca di Carintia ed il patriarca Bertoldo di Aquileja e, nel 1315, Rodolfo e Gerardino di Buja infliggono una sconfitta alle truppe del conte Gorizia. Alcuni membri di questa famiglia formularono, dietro incarico avutone, lo statuto del comune di Buja, che nel 1371 addì 8 dic. fu approvato dal Consiglio del luogo e dal patriarca
