Famiglia meridionale, di chiara ed antica nobiltà. Il Palizzolo riferisce esser questo un casato originario dell'Irlanda, col nome di "Byron" italianizzato in Barone. Il Toraldo, invece, nel suo "Il sedile e la Nobiltà di Tropea" fa discendere la famiglia da un Geracio, soldato francese, proveniente della Provenza, al seguito di Carlo I d'Angiò, dal quale ricevette il feudo di La Cattiva e Livaldi in Calabria, con concessione del 23 luglio 1279. Il casato si diramò in moltissime città del Sud Italia ma, il ramo principale, si stabilì in Tropea, nel XV secolo. Un Antonello fu difensore della città di Napoli contro gli Acerrani, al tempo di Alfonso I d'Aragona; Ferdinando combattè nella battaglia di Lepanto, il 7 ottobre 1571, contro i saraceni; Antonio, padre gesuita, fu autore di una vita di San Domenico. La famiglia, inoltre, ha dato vari cavalieri all'Ordine di Malta, fra il XVI e XVII secolo.
