Este linaje es originario de las montañas de Burgos. Sus ramas pasaron a La Rioja y otras regiones. En La Rioja hubo una casa muy principal en la villa de Matute y de esa cas era descendiente, a mediados del siglo XVI, Juan Fernández de B. , que casó con Doña Margarita de Urrutia. Los Barra pasaron a América a mediados del siglo XVI, y una de sus ramas radicó en la ciudad de Concepción (Chile). Las armas más antiguas son las señaladas en: Repertorio de blasones de la comunidad hispanica - letras A-B-C-CH Vicente De Cadenas y Vicent Instituto Salazar y Castro. Los de Navarra traen: En oro, un castillo, de gules, y en punta, tres cabezas de moro. Otros traen: Escacado de plata y gules. Bordura de plata con cuatro lises de azur.
