Encontramo-la em diferentes épocas e localidades, com numerosos personagens ilustres. Existia já no reinadode D. Afondo Henriques este apelido, proveniente de alcunha. Houve em tempos mais modernos pessoas do mesmo apelido, mas não se sabe se descendiam dos primeiros que o usaram. Não se conhecem armas próprias desta família, mas parece que usou as dos Barejolas, a acreditar no Tesouro da Nobreza, do Rei de Armas Índia Francisco Coelho.
