This surname is, according to some authors, originating from that of Barrena, and thus his name seems to indicate it, since in Castilian B. means House of Barrena. It had solar houses in Guipúzcoa, Vizcaya, Navarra and La Rioja. Those of Guipúzcoa resided in the towns of Elgóibar, Elgueta, Villafranca de Oria and Ezquioga. Those of Vizcaya, in Bilbao, Abadiano and Dima. Descendant of the house of Elgóibar and native of Bilbao, he was Don Joaquín de B., first Marquis of the Port and diplomat of the 18th century.
