Famiglia piemontese originaria di Strasburgo in Francia, di antica e nobile tradizione, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia donde i suoi membri, accolti nelle importanti cariche delle città ove ebbero dimora, acquisirono prestigio e furono cospicui. La casata ed il suo blasone sono annotati nel "Nobiliaire et Armorial de Bretagne" dal suo autore Pol Potier de Coursy, ma non vi sono atti o istromenti fino al XVIII secolo in quanto sono andati perduti, come quelli di molte altre famiglie nobili, nelle varie incursioni di eserciti stranieri in Francia durante il medioevo. Un Giovanni fu Luogotenente del Re a Port Louis nel 1717; un Guglielmo fu Podestà di Morlaix nel 1765. In Italia i nomi dei Barrera sono prevalentemente ricordati in annuari e contratti di vendita, di terre e case, fin dal XVII secolo, da questi appare che erano di condizione agiata e nobile.
