Este ilustre y noble linaje se extendió por toda España, con casas solares en Santander, Galicia, las Castillas, Aragón y Andalucía. Existió una casa muy antigua de este linaje en Santillana (Santander) y en Medina del campo (Valladolid) y a ella perteneció Juan Barrera, natural de Medina quien contrajo matrimonio con Doña Francisca de Montalvo, fueron padres de Alonso de Barrera y Montalvo natural de Medina del campo, que casó con Doña Catalina de Mondragón y tuvieron por hijo a Juan de la Barrera y Mondragón, quien fue caballero de la Orden de Santiago en la que ingresó, el 20 de agosto de 1649. En Sevilla hubo casa solar de este linaje exactamente en la Villa de Marchena siendo sus caballeros portadores de cargos honoríficos.
