The name 'Barri' originates from England, and France. It is a topographic name from the Anglo Norman French word 'barri' meaning rampart later a suburb outside the rampart of a town (a word of uncertain origin). In Scotland it is derived from the habitational name from any of the various places, especially one in the former county of Angus, probably so called from the Gaelic word 'borrach' meaning rough grassy hill. Compiled information from Historical and Private archive's has confirmed that the surname 'Barry' and or it's variant's, dates as far back as the reign of Edward III, where a 'John de Barry', from Somerset, England, is recorded. The exact period of settlement in North America has not been definitely determined but Information extracted from Public and Civil registry archive's confirm that one of the first settlers was a certain 'William Barry', aged 25, a butcher by trade, from Somerset, England. He immigrated to North America in 1774, sailing from the Port of Bristol aboard the ship named the 'Sally' on the 19th of December 1774, arriving in Maryland on the 26th of December of the same, where he served as indentured servant to a Mr. William Moat. Today, 'Barry' is the '560th' most common surname in North America.
