Antica famiglia di Cotignola, dove esercitò la Magistratura e fu consultata nelle gravi evenienze dalla Patria. In un elenco del 1407 i Martuzzi erano annoverati, insieme con gli Attendolo, fra i "primi homines" ai quali il Pubblico di Cotignola aveva concesso il privilegio di inserire il cotogno nel proprio stemma gentilizio. Comandanti di truppe, seguirono le sorti dello Sforza e dei suoi successori e, da Ludovico il Moro Duca di Milano, ebbero conferma dell'antica nobiltà. Nel 1687, la famiglia si trasferì a Bagnacavallo, dove fu ammessa quel Consiglio Nobile "a godere gli onori e privilegi di primo grado" e, in data 14 agosto 1846, fu riconosciuta, dalla S. Congregazione degli Studi, come "antica e nobile di Bagnacavallo"; il 23 aprile 1845 fu ascritta, "per la sua antica nobiltà", al patriziato di Ascoli e con Breve del 29 settembre 1856, venne decorata dal Sommo Pontefice Pio IX del titolo di Conte
