La antigua y noble familia Messina, según lo informado por Minutoli, llamada Basilico o Basilicò, que se ha extendido a lo largo de los siglos en varias regiones de Italia. El origen de esta cognominación, en nombre de ilustres genealogistas, debe buscarse en el nombre medieval, de origen griego, "Basilicus", probablemente perteneciente a un progenitor, hoy desconocido. En cualquier caso, esta familia, en todas las edades, siempre logró destacarse, gracias a los altos personajes, a los que dio a luz. Entre estos, sin aumentar el valor de lo omitido, recordamos: un Giovanni Basilico, un soldado, que poseía, en la primera mitad del siglo XV, el feudo de Rivoya; un Nicolò que era acatapano de Randazzo, en 1409; un Matteo, de Randazzo, quien, para su esposa Antonia de Pascia, poseía 40 onzas anuales sobre las secretarías de Randazzo y se le invirtió el 27 de agosto de 1463; un Giacomo, doctor
