A antiga e nobre família Messina, conforme relatada por Minutoli, chamada Basilico ou Basilicò, que se espalhou ao longo dos séculos em várias regiões da Itália. A origem dessa cognominação, para dizer o mínimo de genealogistas ilustres, deve ser procurada no nome medieval, de origem grega "Basilicus", provavelmente pertencente a um progenitor hoje desconhecido. De qualquer forma, essa família, em todas as épocas, sempre conseguiu se destacar, graças aos altos personagens, aos quais deu à luz.
