Antigua y muy noble familia Marche, originaria de Gubbio pero con residencia en Fossombrone, llamada Battelli o Battello, que se extendió a lo largo de los siglos en varias regiones de Italia. El origen de esta cognominación, según genealogistas autorizados, debe buscarse en una modificación del nombre latino tardío, de origen griego, "Bathyllus", que probablemente pertenecía a un progenitor ahora desconocido.
