Ebbe questa famiglia dieci volte il priorato, dal 1468 al 1525. Battista B., di altro Battista, era priore nel 1515 quando Leone X entrò solennemente in Firenze, e fu al pari di tutti i suoi colleghi creato conte palatino. Numerosi personaggi di tale cognome si trovano di sovente menzionati nei documenti notarili fin dai secoli trascorsi, dai quali appare che erano di condizione nobile. Nei ricordi dei tempi andati si leggono alcune varianti di questo cognome, dovute alle solite cause della pronunzia dialettale e dal modo di interpretare nella scritturazione i cognomi. La presenza dell'arma e del motto nella bibliografia documentata della famiglia Battista ci conferma l'avita nobiltà raggiunta dalla casata. Infatti l'origine del motto risale a circa il XIV secolo e deve essere ricercata in quei detti arguti che venivano scritti sui vessilli o bandiere dei cavalieri, esposti alle finestre delle locande in cui questi alloggiavano, in occasione dei
