E' una delle più antiche e nobili famiglie senesi, come ci viene dimostrato dai documenti e dalle opere degli storici, venendo annoverata fra quelle stirpi romane che, ai tempi delle invasioni barbariche , emigrarono e vennero a fissarsi in Siena. Certo si è che intorno al 1000 era già famiglia ricca e potente e copriva le maggiori cariche cittadine. Il più antico documento relativo alla famiglia suddetta si riferisce ad una donazione fatta nel 1030 da Crescenzio di Boste al vescovo Leone. Ugolini di Boste, valente giurista, fu varie volte console della Repubblica, fra il 1137 e il 1168. Castellano di Crescenzio fu anch'egli varie volte console e durante il tempo del suo ufficio fu fatta la famosa Fonte Branda, come si può ancora leggere in una iscrizione marmorea dell'anno 1193, murata per l'occasione sulla fonte medesima. Ranieri di Castellano fu guerriero valoroso e nel 1239 ebbe l'incarico di trattare
