Famiglia di antica e nobile tradizione, delle cui origini non vi sono notizie certe propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia con una maggior presenza in Lombardia ed Emilia Romagna. La tesi più accreditata tra i genealogisti la vuole originaria del Piemonte e la cognominizzazione derivata dal cognome toscano "Beccari", tipico della zona di Acqui, probabile luogo di origine del capostipite. I nomi dei Beccati sono prevalentemente ricordati in istromenti, annuari e contratti di vendita di terre e case fin da tempi assai remoti, dai quale appare che erano di condizione agiata e nobile. Un Jacopo Bartolomeo fu illustre professore a Zurigo, esperto nella scienza del moto delle acque, nel secolo decimo ottavo; Un Beccati fu decorato con la Medaglia d'Oro al Valor Militare per aver partecipato il 25 marzo 1941, alla prima azione coronata da successo della Xª Flottiglia MAS del Regno d'Italia.
