Si può fondatamente ritenere che questa antichissima famiglia ripeta il suo cognome da Bagno, nel territorio fiorentino, anziché seguire il Rucellai che, nel suo Priorista, per una errata interpretazione di un passo del Verino relativo ai Barbadori, la fa provenire di Alemagna. Già nell'anno 1246 troviamo che questa famiglia, come casa guelfa del Sesto di S. Pietro Scheraggio, combattono contro gli Uberti, capi della fazione ghibellina; e nel 1300 fanno parte della fazione dei Donati, cioè dei guelfi neri, contro i Cerchi. Francesco di Rosso, nel 1347, fu eletto al priorato; carica che i suoi successori sostennero altre 14 volte, e tre volte raggiunsero il supremo onore del gonfalonierato di giustizia. Francesco di Ranieri era castellano di Pisa nel 1465; Carlo, capitano di Cortona, fu nel 1529 fatto prigioniero dal principe di Orange, quando quella cittadella dovette arrendersi alle sue truppe.
