Très illustre maison de la Bretagne, d'une haute antiquité, dont les premiers auteurs connus sont: Olivier, croisé en 1246 (Chartes latines de 1191 à 1249 relatives aux croisés, provenant du cabinet Courtois); Gilles, fils d'Etienne, donne, en 1297, à son frère juveigneur Etienne, le lieu de Couësbily en Ménéac; Pierre, connétable de Ploërmel, commandant l'artillerie au siège de Chateauceaux en 1420; Guillaume, son fils, auteur des seigneurs du Vauniel qui existent encore, mariè; en 1435, à Marie e Scépeaux; Jean, chevalier de l'Hermine en 1454; Isabeau, abbesse de la Joie en 1469. Un membre admis aux honneurs de la Cour en 1787. La branche aînée fondue en 1558 dans Avaugour Saint-Laurent. La branche de Vay a été substituée au XV siècle aux nom et armes d'Avaugour, par le mariage de Jean, seigneur de Vay, avec Blanche d'Avaugour, dame de Kergroix, dernière du nom.
