Apellido originario de Cataluña. En la provincia de Lérida hay dos villas denominadas B., cuyo nombre debe estar relacionado con el del linaje. Por lo menos los B. fueron señores de esas villas, según lo afirma don Pedro Vitales. Pedro B., o Benavente, marchó desde la Vega de Cardales a servir al rey Jaime I de Aragón en la conquista de Valencia, y el citado monarca le premió su valor y servicios haciéndole Capitán y dándole casas y tierras en la villa de Ayora (Valencia), para que allí poblara. Dejó sucesores que extendieron su apellido por el reino valenciano. Existe otro linaje de B. que es castellano y no guarda ninguna relación con el que nos ocupa.
