Apellido de origen canario, muy extendido en el Archipiélago. Bencomo fue uno de los cinco reyes guanches de Tenerife, que se rindieron el 25 de julio de 1496, terminando así la conquista de las Islas Canarias. Este apellido ha enlazado con las principales familias de Canarias, dando hijos ilustres al país. Entre ellos puede contarse Don Cristóbal Bencomo que nació en La Laguna el 30 de agosto de 1758, estudió en el convento de San Franciso de La Laguna, fue profesor de latín y preceptor del Rey don Fernando VII, siendo éste infante y murío en Sevilla el 15 de abril de 1835. Durante la guerra de la Independencia se retiró a Tenerife y en 1814 volvió a Madrid llamado por el Rey, cuyo favor se aumentó, obteniendo con su influjo la creación del obispado de Tenerife.
