Surname of Canarian origin, very widespread in the Archipelago. Bencomo was one of the five Guanche kings of Tenerife, who surrendered on July 25, 1496, thus ending the conquest of the Canary Islands. This surname has linked with the main families of the Canary Islands, giving illustrious children to the country. Among them can be counted Don Cristóbal Bencomo who was born in La Laguna on August 30, 1758, studied at the convent of San Franciso de La Laguna, was a Latin teacher and tutor to King Fernando VII, who was an infant and died in Seville on April 15, 1835. During the War of Independence he retired to Tenerife and in 1814 he returned to Madrid called by the King, whose favor increased, obtaining with his influence the creation of the bishopric of Tenerife.
