Sobrenome de origem canária, muito difundido no arquipélago. Bencomo foi um dos cinco reis Guanche de Tenerife, que se rendeu em 25 de julho de 1496, terminando assim a conquista das Ilhas Canárias. Este sobrenome ligou-se às principais famílias das Ilhas Canárias, dando filhos ilustres ao país. Entre eles pode ser contado Don Cristóbal Bencomo que nasceu em La Laguna em 30 de agosto de 1758, estudou no convento de San Francisco de La Laguna, foi professor de latim e tutor do rei Fernando VII, que era criança e morreu em Sevilha em 15 de abril de 1835. Durante a Guerra da Independência retirou-se para Tenerife e em 1814 voltou a Madrid chamado pelo Rei, cujo favor aumentou, obtendo com sua influência a criação do bispado de Tenerife. Em 1820, refugiou-se em Sevilha, onde morreu. Seus restos mortais foram transferidos para La Laguna em 1837. Ele também foi arcebispo de
