Early records reveal that this surname originated in England. The etymological origin of the surname Bennett can be found in the Latin name "Benedictus", which means "blessed". The earliest written refernces to persons bearing this surname pertain to "Benett de Hankeston" (mentioned in a document from the year 1273), and later, a Joana Benet (her name being recorded in a document dated 1379). Two of the individuals bearing this name to sail to the American colonies were: Charles Bennett, who was sent as a prisoner after the Monmouth Rebellion in 1685, and Edward Bennett, who was already living in Virgina in 1624. We have discovered certain details about an individual in the 18th century who had this surname: John S. Bennett, emigrated from Middlesex with his two brothers, Ruben and Joseph, in 1780. He settled in Livingston County, New York, married a woman named Nancy Smith, and was the father of Horace Alderman Bennett. Horace married Sarah Wilson, of Brighton, Michigan. he died in November, 1862. Other related surnames which are of the same origin are: Benedict, Bénet, Bené in France; Benitez in Spanish-speaking countries, and Beincken in Germany. According to the 1990 U.S. Census, Bennett is the 1200th most common surname in the United States.
