Familia boloñesa histórica que tuvo una soberanía efectiva sobre esa ciudad desde 1401. Famoso en la historia de los señoríos italianos, su esplendor se mezcla con los del Renacimiento. Tenía el privilegio imperial de acuñar moneda; galardonado con una gran cantidad de feudos y privilegios. Aníbal, esposo de Lucrezia d'Este, despojado del señorío de Bolonia, pasó a la Corte Estense y se unió a esa casa principesca. Además de los numerosos feudos, la familia tenía la grannada de España, la agregación a la casa de Aragón, a la que Sforza Visconti, vestida con la costumbre de Malta y otras órdenes militares, se atribuía a los patricios de Venecia, de Roma, de Bolonia, Ferrara, Ravenna. Tenía el palatinado del emperador Maximiliano, un conjunto de títulos y honores como para ponerlo y por el origen y el esplendor a la par con cualquier casa soberana.
