La famiglia è nota in Umbria in epoca remota. Romano di Berto fu podestà di Foligno nel 1424, Gabriele suo fratello fu vescovo di Fossombrone nel 1434, Antonio fu connestabile nella sua patria per la fiera e festa di S. Ubaldo nel 1638. S.S. Benedetto XIV con privilegio sovrano (1748) li nominò marchesi di Burano. La famiglia è iscritta nell'Elenco ufficiale col titolo di patrizio eugobino, mf.; marchese di Burano, m.; in persona di Roberto e dei figli Angela Maria, Caterina, Carlo, Maria, Giuseppina. Tali sono i principii, che da sopracitati Autori si diedero a questa famiglia, ma per esser questo fatto assai remoto, e d'historia molto lontana, lasciamo perciò a più eruditi delle sacre antichità, e dell'historie l'investigarne il suo certo principio.
