Antica famiglia ligure che ha lasciato memoria sin da epoca remota. Tradizionalmente la Casata trae origine e nome da Bernabò Visconti, Signore di Milano. Infatti nel MS del Della Cella "Le Famiglie di Chiavari" è citato Matteo Bernabò all'anno 1375 e di lui si dice: "Egli per la morte di suo zio Giovanni Visconti, Arcivescovo e Signore di Milano, restò per conseguenza Signore di Genova, ancora sottoposta alla Signoria di Milano, motivo per cui altri studiosi voglio che li Bernabò procedano da Milano". Tuttavia, secondo il genealogista genovese Edoardo Ganduccio (sec. XVI-XVII), i Bernabò trarrebbero origine da Sestri Levante e di lì sarebbero passati in Genova prima del 1346. Notiamo come la prima ipotesi non escluda la seconda, dato che Bernabò Visconti signoreggiò le terre di Sestri Levante e di Chiavari proprio alla fine del XIV secolo.
