Un cruento episodio di rivalità tra Comuni, tra Milano e Pavia, inizia il quadro cronologico, sebben assai breve, dei Bernabovi un membro dei quali trae a notorietà il nome della famiglia; l'11 agosto 1154 nelle vicinanze di Lardirago presso l'Olona si svolse una violenta battaglia tra milanesi e pavesi ch'ebbe sosta solo sull'imbrunire dopo sanguinose perdite subite da entrambe le parti; il dì seguente i milanesi sgomenti e presi da panico si ritirarono abbandonando un ricco bottino d'armi, tende ed arnesi nelle mani del nemico: Rinaldo Bernabovo, discendente di famiglia tortonesi, fu uno dei capi balestrieri al servizio di Milano che maggiormente si segnalò per valore e perizia durante il combattimento; stimato come uno dei migliori capitani dei suoi tempi morì pochi anni dopo lo sfortunato scontro. Da un istrumento del 10 gennaio 1186 rilevasi che Giovanni Bernabovis era canonico suddiacono della Cattedrale di Tortona; membri della famiglia B.
