Die alte und sehr edle lombardische Familie, die ursprünglich aus der Stadt Brescia stammte und für diese Zeit auch als Bresciani bekannt war, ließ sich um die Wende des 9. Jahrhunderts in Cremona, im 15. Jahrhundert in Bologna und in Ferrara nieder und breitete sich anschließend auf andere Regionen aus Italien. 1091 war ein Leonardo, ehemaliger Senator des Heimatlandes, ein Dekurion, und nach ihm erreichten weitere 16 seiner Familie die gleiche Würde. Bernardino wurde 1332 von Clemens VII. Zum Bischof von Berito ernannt. Franceschino war Kapitän von Bernabò Visconti und zeichnete sich durch einen hohen Wert aus. Marsilio wurde als Ritter geschaffen, der von Papst Urban V. geliebt wurde. Marchesino war Dekurion und Kapitän von Ugolino Cavalcabò und mit seinem Wert gelang es ihm, die Ghibellinen aus Casalmaggiore zu vertreiben. Nikolaus II. War Arzt in beiden Gesetzen und diente mit Kardinal Vitelleschi, der in Bologna gefesselt war, um seine Nachkommen

Blasone della famiglia Bersani nobile in Emilia Romagna ricostruito da un disegno conservato presso la Biblioteca Comunale dell'Archiginnasio di Bologna nell'opera "Il Blasone bolognese, cioè Arme gentilizie di famiglie bolognesi, nobili, cittadinesche e aggregate" di Floriano Canetoli realizzata tra il 1791 e il 1795.
