Famiglia di antica e nobile tradizione, originaria della Toscana, detta Bertino o Bertini, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Si ritiene che questa cognominizzazione, anteriore al XV secolo, derivi da una modificazione di fonetica storica di una patronimia, derivata da un capostipite di nome Bertinus, del quale, purtroppo, non vi sono notizie certe. Nei Protocolli di Ser Gherardo Rossi, che si conservano nell'Archivio generale di Firenze, si legge che un Bertino , fu mandato dalla Repubblica Fiorentina, nel 1313, quale Soldato di Guarnigione in Montecatini di Valdinievole, ed è questa la prima ricordanza che si ha di tal Casato, il quale godette per tre volte il Priorato, e la prima volta nel 1346, con un Simone, figlio del detto Bertino. Quest'ultimo, ebbe anche un altro figlio, nominato Lippo, il quale, nel 1380, andò a stabilirsi in Pescia, ove prese moglie e trapiantò la propria famiglia. In Pescia,
