Familia de tradición antigua y noble, originaria de la Toscana, llamada Bertino o Bertini, que se ha extendido a lo largo de los siglos en varias regiones de Italia. Se cree que esta cognominización, anterior al siglo XV, deriva de una modificación de la fonética histórica de una patronimia, derivada de un progenitor llamado Bertinus, del cual, desafortunadamente, no hay información cierta. En los Protocolos de Ser Gherardo Rossi, que se guardan en el Archivo General de Florencia, leemos que la República Florentina envió a Bertino, en 1313, como Soldado de la Guarnición en Montecatini di Valdinievole, y este es el primer recordatorio que tenemos de este Casato, que disfrutó del Priorato tres veces, y la primera vez en 1346, con un Simone, hijo de dicho Bertino. Este último también tuvo otro hijo, llamado Lippo, quien, en 1380, se instaló en Pescia, donde se casó y trasplantó a su familia.
