Da un'antica e preminente famiglia biellese di funzionari fiscali emerse nel XVI sec. Pietro B. di Bartolomeo più volte ricevitore dei diritti della Castellania di Biella dal 1391 al 1398; nel 1414 l'imperatoore Sigismondo lo creò conte palatino, difese Ivrea di cui era governatore contro Facino Cane che inseguì nella fuga ripigliando la torre di Mongrando e Gaglianico di cui il duca Amedeo VIII gli infeudò la terza parte con Tollegno e Miagliano, ai piedi dei monti Andorno, il 1 ottobre 1422 succesivamente erette in contea. La discendenza onorò il casato con preclari vari, decorati dell'Ordine di Malta e distintisi al servizio della Chiesa, nelle armi, nella diplomazia, nelle magistrature tra i quali è doveroso ricordare Giangiacomo B. insigne giureconsulto: per un biennio fu pretore di Tortona che nel 1555 premiò il suo operato concedendogli con magnifica motivazione la cittadinanza e l'arma dertonense da inquartare nella propria; altro inquarto
