Antica ed assai nobile famiglia toscana, oriunda da Carraia, la quale ottenne la cittadinanza di Luca nel 1540, in persona del giurista Rocco, e la nobiltà nel 1765. Nel 1787, inoltre, fu iscritta nel 1787 nel Libro d'Oro delle famiglie nobili della Repubblica. La famiglia Biancalana ebbe il proprio palazzo in via dell'Arcivescovato, presso San Martino, e la sepoltura in S. Maria Cortelandini ed in S. Frediano. Nel secolo XVII Bernardino, famigliare di Filippo IV, fu Inquisitore del S. Uffizio ed autore della "Storia del Volto Santo" in lingua spagnola (Madrid, Rodriguez,1658). Suoi contemporanei furono altri ecclesiastici: Pietro, canonico e primicerio della cattedrale di Lucca, restauratore della chiesa di S. Anastasio. Rocco, canonico di S. Pietro e di S. Maria Maggiore in Roma; Girolamo, priore di S. Alessandro e vicario generale di mons. Giuseppe de Nobili, arcivescovo di Lucca, il quale fu nominato Decano di S. Michele in Foro
