Questa famiglia, che fu partigiana dei Carraresi, Forzatè e da Montagnon contro i Lemizzoni e da Ponte, discende da Mamo duca di Baviera. Conservò l'ufficio ereditario di siniscalchi imperiali. Fino dal 1081 i suoi membri furono ascritti fra i nobili cittadini, e nel 1196 ebbero il titolo di conti. Pagano nel 1148 Vescovo della sua patria. Si dissero Bibao Steno da un loro antenato, e della Torre dai feudi che possedevano in questa terra. A questa famiglia ha appartenuto il titolo di Conte, titolo che solevasi dagli imperatori a coloro che erano al loro fianco. Da questi Conti si sceglieva coloro che venivano destinati a soprintendere agli uffizi del regio palazzo, ed altri erano mandati al governo delle provincie dell'impero ed a gurdare i confini. Erano poi altri conti, estranei ai cennati uffizi, come quelli addetti all'annona, al commercio; ed anche i provveditori dell'esercito si ebbero quel titolo. Ai tempi dei Goti la dignità di Conte fu pur mantenuta a parecchi pubblici funzionari; ed i Longobardi ancora dissero i loro governatori conti o castaldi.
