Le titre de duc d'Isly a été confirmé par les lettres patentes du 16 septembre 1844, à Thomas-Robert, maréchal de France et gouverneur de l'Algérie, en mémoire de la victoire remportée par l'armée française, le 14 avril précédent, sur les bords de la rivière de ce nom. Bien que Borel-d'Hauterive dise que le grand-père du maréchal, duc d'Isly, était forgeron et qu'il sut gagner de l'argent avec son bras vigoureux et en se brûlant les yeux et les doigts, il n'en est pas moins vrai que la noblesse de son père est constatée par sa présence, en 1789, aux assemblées de la noblesse du Périgord et qu'il est inscrit parmi les votants: Messire Jean-Ambroise, chevalier, seigneur de la Piconnerie.
