Antica e nobile famiglia, che si vuole sia stata portata in Sicilia da un Antonino, padre di Pietro, cittadino di Lentini, primo barone di Carmito, per conferma di re Ludovico, con privilegio del 13 dicembre 1353; detto Pietro possedette pure il molino di Barrafaudo in Lentini e l'ufficio di portulanotto in detta città. Un Pharenato ottenne, da re Federico, concessione in feudo di onze 30 annue sopra la gabella del quartuccio del vino di Terranova. Enrico, Niccolò, Tommaso e Antonio , figli di Pietro, ebbero il 31 gennaio 1399 conferma dell'ufficio di portulanotto di Lentini; un Giuliano, a dire dell'Inveges, fu governatore di Palermo nel 1496; un Giovan Luigi fu senatore di Palermo negli anni 1540-41, 1561-62; un Simone tenne la stessa carica negli anni 1543-44, 1158-59; un Fabrizio la tenne negli anni 1580-81 e 1587-88; un Girolamo, secondo il Di Giovanni, fu uomo assai letterato e fu cappellano maggiore
