Antica ed assai nobile famiglia italiana, originaria della Toscana ma con importanti insediamenti anche nel Regno di Napoli, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni europee, trovando nobile dimora in Polonia. Essa ha avuto culla nella città di Firenze da donde poi si portò in Lucca, nell'anno 1280. Nella nuova residenza gli esponenti di questo casato occuparono sempre le più pregevoli cariche ed ebbero ruoli attivi nella politica locale. Essi avevano la qualifica di "pannaioli" e "battitor d'oro", di notai e dottori in legge. Al tempo di Castruccio Castracani i Boccella furono nel Consiglio e nel 1331 assisterono al giuramento di Giovanni di Boemia. Ricordiamo, inoltre: Nicolao Boccella, membro di un consiglio di sette nobili, istituito nel 1307; Ludovico Boccella, degli Anziani nel 1370; Luigi, del fu Giovani Boccella, Gonfaloniere di giustizia nel 1377; Simone Boccella, Gonfaloniere di Lucca ed ambasciatore (1370) a Gregorio XII ad Avignone.
