Famiglia ligure assai antica e nobile di origine provenzale. Dell'origine di questa cognominizzazione non vi sono notizie certe, si vuole, tuttavia, che derivi dal nome Boglio e la variazione sia dovuta alle solite cause della fonetica storica, della pronunzia dialettale e dal modo di interpretare nella scritturazione i cognomi. I Bolia sono ricordati in testi, atti notarili e contratti di vendita di terre e case sin da tempi molto antichi, dai quali appare che erano di condizione nobile. Di stirpe viscontile, godette della Signoria in Nizza nel XV secolo. Altro ramo. Famiglia assai antica e nobile di Carrara, fu ascritta alla nobiltà nel XVI secolo. Da remoto tempo non si hanno più aggiornamenti araldici di questo ramo. Pare siano molto riguardevoli i soggetti viventi di questa famiglia che con tanto decoro sostentano questo così antico e nobile cognome che ha avuto uomini di Consiglio, e altri soggetti illustri.
