Antica famiglia, di chiara ed avita nobiltà, originaria di Correggio, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia, celebre per i suoi molti membri illustri, per santità e dottrina. Il cavaliere Ottavio, di Stefano, agente diplomatico del duca di Modena in Germania (1619-1645), per sé e il fratello Girolamo e discendenti, in perpetuo d'ambo i sessi, ottenne il titolo di nobile del Sacro Romano Impero, da Ferdinando II (12 novembre 1633). Girolamo, di Ottavio, fu creato conte dal duca di Modena, il 2 ottobre 1720. Giuseppe di Girolamo, governatore estense in Carfagnana (1754-1767) fu acclamato dalla comunità di Modena nobile modenese (13 dicembre 1765), titolo questo riconfermato al figlio di lui, Giulio che venne inscritto nel nuovo Libro d'oro il 31 dicembre 1816. Lo stesso conte Giulio fin dall'11 aprile 1787 era stato ascritto alla nobiltà di Reggio, così come nel 1818 otteneva di esser nominato nobile di
